Building a History Small Business of the year

By: Joel Schlesinger, For The Calgary Herald | October 20, 2009

If name recognition is half the battle in business, then three local companies are winning the war. ICS Group, Watts Mechanical Services and Zoom Communications have quickly made a name for themselves in their respective sectors.

Most recently though, the three companies have caught the eye of the Calgary business community, garnering nominations for the RBC Small Business of the Year Award.

Zoom Communications, meanwhile, is one Canada's leading media companies in integrating video on the web for clients like Canadian Tire, University of Calgary and City of Calgary.

"(Web video technology) is what makes us unique, but we have a fairly unique culture in our company as well," says Zoom Communications president Jeff Bradshaw.

"You hear the saying, 'work hard, play hard,' but we have a real dedicated group of individuals."

Founded in 1997 as a traditional TV and film production company with "just four guys in a small office with a phone line," Zoom Communications has grown into an industry leader in web video production development with 22 full-time employees working out of its 6,000-square-foot headquarters in central Calgary.

The winner of the RBC Small Business of the Year Award was announced at the Small Business Week gala dinner Oct. 19. Results were not available at press time.
